CHILDREN

At Helm Care Services we deliver a wide range of care. We offer support for children and young people with diverse backgrounds and specific needs.

INTERVENTIONS

Our interventions are determined following assessment and are in line with the current evidenced based practice. Our interventions include, but are not limited to:

Family Contact

We work independently and with external agencies to support and facilitate contact between each child and young person with their parents/carers, siblings, relatives and friends in accordance to their specific needs.

Short & Long Term Placement

Every child deserves a place to call home. We focus on understanding the child and young person’s unique needs and strength to provide them with increased resilience and healthy coping strategies while building insight and improving emotional and mental health.

We continuously review the child and young person’s care package to ensure it remains valid and effective in order to promote recovery.

Leaving Care Support

From the moment a child comes into our care, we provide a safe haven to nurture their talents and prepare them for the future. Our aim is to develop their career options and help secure employment or further education, supported via outreach upon progressing to independent living.

Systemic Approach

Our systemic approach focuses on the whole family system, where we value families' contribution to recovery. As such we offer all families psychoeducation through therapy sessions, psychological toolkits, and direct training, including The Triple P parenting course and the Solihull approach. We strive to repair relationships and equip both child and family with the knowledge and skills to build brighter futures

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

We have specialist Cognitive Behaviour Therapists who work with children and young people to treat difficulties such as depression and anxiety.

CBT can also be used to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and social phobia. It also figures in the treatment of eating disorders, addictions and psychosis.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

We have specialist clinicians who work with children and young people who experience difficulties in managing their emotions, who have found unhelpful ways of coping which include self harm, attempted suicide, chaotic and risky behaviours.

Therapists work with children and young people to deliver four basic skill sets, these are emotional regulation, mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR)

We have Psychotherapists who work with children and young people who experienced significant trauma and disturbing life experiences.

Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference.

It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy demonstrates that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma in the same way that the body recovers from physical trauma.

Interpersonal therapy (IPT)

We have specialist therapists that work with children and young people who experience anxiety, depression and/or relationship difficulties, and those who have experienced bereavement.

Solution Focused Therapy also referred to as Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)

Solution Focused Therapy also referred to as Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) - We have specialist therapists that work with children and young people who have a range of emotional and mental health difficulties. SFBT can be used as a standalone therapeutic intervention, or it can be used in conjunction with other therapy styles and treatments.

Though not a cure for psychiatric disorders such as depression or schizophrenia, SFBT may help improve quality of life for those who suffer from these conditions. SFBT focuses on self-development, growth and responsibility. It is goal-directed and focuses on building solutions, rather than on problem-solving.

Animal Therapy

Animal therapy or pet therapy refers to the use of animals as a way to help people cope with and recover from some physical and mental health conditions.

Animals may be able to provide comfort and reduce stress/ anxiety, making it easier for a child and young person to access specific therapy. Using animals and pets in this way complements and enhances other therapies, but it does not substitute them.

Animal therapy builds on a concept called the human-animal bond, which describes people's desire to interact with and relate to animals. Many people can form a bond with a friendly animal by interacting with them. A child and young person can experience a calming effect as a result of this bond.

This bond can help the child and young person in a variety of ways, including reducing boredom, increasing activity through walks and play, providing companionship and decreasing loneliness, increasing social interactions, improving mood, and general well-being.

Overall, the goal of animal or pet therapy is to alleviate or help children and young people to manage symptoms of various conditions.

Helm care services are able to facilitate carefully planned and risk-assessed animal therapy sessions for our children and young people according to their specific needs.

Ecotherapy

Ecotherapy is a type of therapeutic intervention which entails participating in outdoor activities in nature. Depending on whether the activity emphasises exercise, horticulture (gardening), or therapy, people may use different words to describe ecotherapy. Green exercise, green care, green therapy, and horticultural therapy are some phrases you may hear.

There is no single definition of ecotherapy, but it is frequently used to describe a regular, structured activity that:

- Is led by trained professional (sometimes a therapist), who is there for support
- Is focused on doing an activity rather than health
- Takes place in a green environment
- Is related to exploring and appreciating the natural world
- Involves spending time with other people, although you can always choose to interact at your own pace

At Helm Care Services, we provide all our children and young people eco opportunities within our own private gardens or within the wider community.
